About HagonoyWelcome to Hagonoy
It is composed of 26 barangays of which seven are classified as urban. The total land area of Hagonoy is 10,310 hectares. As of 2007 NSO census, the town has a total population of 126,329 distributed in 25,900 households.
Being situated on tidal flats, the municipality has elevations ranging from 0 to 1 meter and slopes ranging only from 0 to 1 percent. This makes the town prone to periodic tidal surges from Manila Bay and to flooding from the riverine courses that have been rendered shallow by accelerated siltation. The town also serves as catch basin from the almost annual overspill of Pampanga and Angat rivers due to excessive rainfall during typhoon season. This adverse condition has affected 19 barangays, and most importantly the town center, resulting to slow economic development and social disturbance in health, education and transportation. The town was made popular by two significant figures: National Shrine of St. Anne and the late Gat Blas F. Ople. The former is a century-old catholic church built by Augustinian priars and the only one in the country where the relics of St. Anne and St. Joaquim, parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, are venerated. While the latter is a famous journalist and politician who had served several high-ranking positions in the executive and legislative branch of the Philippine government including Senate President, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Labor. |
